In collaborative efforts with Artists and galleries associated with the Ink People, Kites as Art installations are being displayed in Old Town Eureka. The Redwood Coast Kite Festival will be a free public event held along the Humboldt Bay waterfront. Along with the Festival, there will be an Artisans Fair. Please join us for the 2024 Redwood Coast Kite Festival!
Kite Festivals have something for everyone. Kiting and kite creation is an art form, filling the skies with color and shapes, and employing skills of science, technology, art, and mathematics. It encourages creativity in all ages and skill levels.
Since Spring of 2019, a small and continuously growing group of kiters have been flying on Halverson Park, Waterfront Fields, in Eureka. Several days each week, weather providing, various folks who fly kites can be seen bringing joy to community members. Everyone enjoys watching various types of kites flying in the sky. Kite flying is a healthy outdoor physical activity open to all ages.
History
The first Redwood Coast Kite Festival in Humboldt took place in 1992. The founder was Mr. Lee Toy. Unfortunately, he passed away before the second festival in 1993. Then, interest in the kite festival shifted to a stronger base of kiting pilots in Southern Oregon. Brookings hosted the Southern Oregon Kite Festival (SOKF) for 25 years through 2018. That free to the public 3 day Kite Festival drew thousands of spectators and reservations at Brookings’ motels, VRBO’s, and B&B’s had to be made a year in advance in some cases. Then, in July of 2021 Brookings ended its hosting of the SOKF leaving a hole for Kite Festivals in this area. Interest in kiting as a sport and art form has continued.
Events
Workshops will be available for a limited number of participants. These will be funded by a combination of ways, some spots will be participant funded while other spots will be “scholarship” or on a sliding scale fee. Registrations will be made through an online portal. In collaborative efforts with Artists and galleries associated with the Ink People, Kites as Art installations are being planned to be displayed during the winter and early spring months. The Redwood Coast Kite Festival will be a free public event held along the Humboldt Bay waterfront. Along with the Festival, there will be an Artisans Fair. Will you please join us in making the 2024 workshops and the Redwood Coast Kite Festival a success?

Vendor Artisan Application Process
We anticipate the number of interested Artists will be high for this 2 day opportunity, May 18 and 19, 2024. The 10×10 spaces can be reserved for a donation of $50 a day or $90 for the weekend as long as they are available. It is recommended that interested persons complete the application sooner rather than later. The number of vendor/display spots will be limited given the space allowed is anticipated to be the grassy space between the Bonnie Gould Auditorium and Waterfront Walk (adjacent to the Adorni Center, Eureka).
